Andrew Mangal was born and raised in Toronto. At the age of 7 he started playing the piano and found his passion for music. He moved on to play the clarinet in the school band at the age of 9 and continued throughout high school. It was in high school when he started singing in the school choir and became more serious about pursuing a career that involved vocal music. He joined Bell' Arte Singers, one of Toronto's finest amateur choirs and enjoyed two years with the group.
In the spring of 2000, Andrew was accepted into the Music Concentration program at McGill specializing in voice. He studied under choral director Lawrence Ewashko and received coaching from voice specialist, Madeleine Palmer. It was at university where he found Effusion, a student-run a cappella group. Andrew was the musical director for 4 years and helped in the group's victory as semi-finalists in the International Collegiate Championship for A Cappella in 2003. Under his direction, the group also participated in Festival 500 (a bi-annual choral festival held in Newfoundland), performed both the Canadian and American anthems for the Montreal
Canadiens and Expos at the Bell Center, as well as various private events for McGill University.
Andrew is currently teaching high school instrumental music at Rosemount High school in the east end of Montreal. He worked for a short time with the Montreal Island City Chorus as interim musical director and is singing in the Montreal-based chamber choir, La Ceilagh. He is also working on furthering his conducting skills by participating in the Canadian Wind Conductor’s Development Program that is held annually in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
